From Toronto, on the Canadian boat

A bus collects you in downtown Toronto and spends up to four hours at the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, with an optional ride on the Niagara City Cruises boat and Journey Behind the Falls. Pick it if you're based in Toronto; just know the boat is the red-poncho Canadian one, not the Maid of the Mist.

Niagara Falls Canada Day Tour from Toronto, Boat Option

About this experience

Let's be clear first, because the listing isn't: this tour never rides the Maid of the Mist. Its inclusions say "Hornblower Boat Cruise (Maid-of-the-Mist)", but since 2014 the boat from the Canadian side has been run by a different company, now called Niagara City Cruises (formerly Hornblower), with red ponchos. Maid of the Mist, with blue ponchos, sails only from Niagara Falls, New York. Both boats show all three falls and push into the Horseshoe basin. Neither is the wrong boat, but if you want the Maid of the Mist itself, you need the USA and Canada combo or a US-side tour.

As a Toronto day trip, it's good value and well run. A bus signed "Queen Tour" collects you from one of ten points between 7:30 a.m. (Royal Ontario Museum) and 8:35 a.m. (Mississauga), and you're back between about 4:30 and 6:15 p.m. A Niagara Parks licensed guide narrates the drive. At the falls you get up to four hours for the attractions, lunch and wandering, plus a maple syrup and chocolate tasting and seasonal stops at the Whirlpool and the Power Station.

Three options: Tour Without Attraction Ticket (the $55 from-price), Tour Including Boat Ride, and Boat+Journey Behind the Falls, with express entry. The Canadian boat runs from about May 1 to November 30, weather permitting, three weeks longer than the Maid of the Mist (which closes on November 8, 2026). In winter it's replaced by other attractions; Journey Behind the Falls stays open all year. No US border, so no passport question if you're already in Canada.

What guests say

★★★★★

We had an incredible day at the Falls - they truly are indescribable. We did both the Hornblower trip and Journey Behind the Falls experience. Both of which we would recommend and would happily do again.

He highly recommended bringing a spare pair of dry socks with you because you do get wet on this tour, I underestimated how wet but thankfully it was a beautiful sunny day we dried off pretty quickly.

The bus ride took about 1.5-2 hours and with a stop at the floral clock. The maple syrup and chocolate tasting was a nice stop. The Niagara falls boat tour was worth it if you've never been before.

We always knew what to expect, we got a bit of sightseeing, a bit of wacky fun on our own, and skipping the line at attractions with clear instructions was also perfect.

Tips before you book

  • Choose an option with the boat if you want to go on the water. The $55 from-price has no attraction tickets.
  • Leave 20 minutes, not 10, to reach your pickup point. A guest misjudged Toronto's morning traffic.
  • Pack dry socks. The Canadian boat soaks you just like the American one.
  • Want to see the Maid of the Mist anyway? Look down from the Canadian viewpoints: the blue-poncho boat is the one by the American Falls.
  • Bring cash for the guide's tip; it isn't included.

Frequently asked questions

Is the boat on the Toronto day trip the Maid of the Mist?

No. The listing calls it "Hornblower Boat Cruise (Maid-of-the-Mist)", but the boat from the Canadian side is Niagara City Cruises (formerly Hornblower), with red ponchos. Maid of the Mist has sailed only from the US side since 2014. Our USA vs Canada guide compares the two.

When does the Canadian boat run?

About May 1 to November 30, weather permitting, per the listing. In winter the tour swaps in other attractions; Journey Behind the Falls is open all year.

Do I need a passport for the Toronto tour?

Not for the tour itself: it stays in Canada. You only need a passport if you walk across the Rainbow Bridge to the US side on your own.

Can I ride the Maid of the Mist from Toronto?

Only by crossing to the US side, with a passport. From Toronto that means a tour like the USA and Canada combo (which picks up in Niagara Falls, not Toronto), or getting to Niagara Falls yourself. The Maid of the Mist closes for 2026 on November 8.
