Booking choice: The USA and Canada combo, from $190 per person. Check dates Tour details
The Niagara River is the border between the US and Canada, and the falls sit right on it. That makes the passport question simple to answer for one thing and fiddly for everything else. For the Maid of the Mist and any tour that stays in New York, you need no ID at all. For a tour that crosses into Ontario, you need a border document for every person, children included.
The rules below come from US Customs and Border Protection, the Government of Canada and the tour listings themselves, checked in October 2026.
The quick answer
No passport for the Maid of the Mist or any US-side tour. You need a passport or another approved document on any tour that crosses to Canada: the USA and Canada combo, the Buffalo tour, and the small-group tour if you stay on the Canadian side. US citizens can use a passport, passport card, Enhanced Driver's License or NEXUS card; US and Canadian children under 16 can show a birth certificate. Non-US visitors may need an ESTA or an I-94 to come back into the US.

Do you need a passport for the Maid of the Mist?
No. Maid of the Mist says passports are not needed, nor any other form of identification.
The boat leaves from Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park, New York, sails into the Horseshoe basin and comes back to the same dock, without landing in Canada. The official FAQ is clear on it. The same goes for every tour that stays on the US side: the Ultimate USA-side tour, the boat and Cave adventure, the guided walk, the Daily Trips tour, the all-inclusive tour and both New York day trips.

Which Niagara Falls tours need a passport?
Any tour that crosses the Rainbow Bridge into Canada. On this site that means the USA and Canada combo, the Buffalo tour, and the small-group tour or Ultimate tour if your hotel is in Canada.
| Tour | Crosses the border? | Passport needed? |
|---|---|---|
| USA and Canada combo | Yes, for the Skylon Tower and Canadian side | Yes; reconfirm documents 24 h before |
| Tour from Buffalo | Yes, both sides | Yes |
| Small-group tour | Only if you are picked up in Canada | If staying in Canada |
| Ultimate USA-side tour | No (pickup in Niagara Falls NY) | Only for guests staying in Canada |
| Boat and Cave adventure | No | No |
| NYC day tour | No | No, unless you walk to Canada on free time |
| Toronto day trip | No, Canadian side only | Whatever you needed to enter Canada |
One rule to know before you book the combo: its listing says your booking may be cancelled without a refund if you don't contact Over the Falls Tours at least 24 hours before the tour to confirm your border documents.

Both countries in one day with a guide who handles the bridge: the boat, Cave of the Winds and the Skylon Tower.
Explore the USA and Canada combo Tour detailsWhat documents do US citizens need to cross into Canada at Niagara Falls?
A US passport, a passport card, an Enhanced Driver's License or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card. A regular driver's license is not enough.
These are the documents accepted under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative for coming back into the US by land. The passport card is cheaper than a book and works at land crossings like the Rainbow Bridge, but not for flights abroad. Canadian citizens returning home use a passport, an Enhanced Driver's License or a trusted traveler card.
US permanent residents should carry their green card and their passport; the Buffalo tour's listing asks for both.
Do children need a passport to go to Canada from Niagara Falls?
US and Canadian children under 16 can cross by land with a birth certificate (original, photocopy or certified copy). Under 19 in an organised group, the same.
That is the CBP rule for the trip back into the US, and it works for land and sea crossings only. If one parent travels alone with a child, carry a consent letter from the other parent; the Government of Canada recommends it, and border officers do ask. Keep children in the same vehicle as their parents at the crossing.

What do non-US visitors need for Niagara Falls Canada and back?
A passport, plus whatever lets you back into the US: for Visa Waiver travellers an ESTA, and an I-94 if you don't hold a valid one. Visa holders need a visa for each country.
Going into Canada by land, visa-exempt travellers don't need an eTA; Canada requires it for air travel only. The return to the US is the part to plan. Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA to enter at a land border, and since Sept 30, 2025 the land-border I-94 costs $30 and an ESTA $40, per the Federal Register notice. A short trip into Canada does not reset your 90 days in the US.
If you need a visa for the US, check that it allows another entry before you cross; a single-entry visa can leave you stuck in Ontario. Over the Falls Tours asks combo guests to reconfirm exactly this, by phone, 24 hours ahead.
Not crossing? The Ultimate USA-side tour needs no passport: boat, Cave and Goat Island from your Niagara Falls NY hotel.
Check dates for the Ultimate USA-side tourCan you walk across the Rainbow Bridge to Canada?
Yes. The bridge is open 24 hours to walkers, and starts a short walk from the state park. Bring a passport or WHTI document.
Walking from the US into Canada costs nothing. Coming back, you pay the toll at a turnstile: $1 in US quarters or CA$1.25, with change machines by the entrance, per the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission. Then you line up for US customs. On summer weekends that line can take a while, so don't plan a tight connection with a tour pickup.

Do passport rules change in winter?
No, but the itineraries do. From Nov 9, 2026 the Maid of the Mist is closed and the cross-border tours replace it with Journey Behind the Falls in Canada.
That makes the passport more useful in winter, not less. The combo and the Buffalo tour both send you to Journey Behind the Falls when the boat is closed, so the Canadian side becomes the heart of the day. A US-side-only tour in winter is mostly viewpoints and the Cave of the Winds Gorge Trip. The boat returns in spring; in 2026 it opened on Apr 24.
How long does the border crossing take on a tour?
Usually minutes, sometimes much longer on busy weekends. Tour durations already allow for it, but operators don't guarantee the time.
The combo includes all bridge tolls, and its listing warns that border delays are outside the operator's control. Have every document out before the van reaches the booth; one missing birth certificate holds up the whole group. If anyone in your party is unsure about entry, pick a US-side tour and skip the border entirely. See USA vs Canada boats for what you would miss, which is less than you think.
