Niagara Falls USA in winter

The boat is gone from November 9, and the falls keep roaring. Here is what still opens its doors on the New York side this winter, what the lights and fireworks schedule looks like, and what the ice really does.

Winter is the quiet season at Niagara Falls State Park, America's oldest state park and open every day of the year with no entry fee. Maid of the Mist closes on November 8, 2026 and the Hurricane Deck is already coming down. Most other things carry on at reduced hours and lower prices.

Here is the US-side winter, attraction by attraction, plus the Canadian fireworks you can watch from New York.

The quick answer

On the US side this winter the park, the Cave of the Winds Gorge Trip ($14 adult, $10 youth), the Observation Tower and the nightly illuminations stay open. Maid of the Mist and the Hurricane Deck are closed from November 9, and the Niagara Scenic Trolley ends on November 29. Parking is $10 a day from October 12 to March 31. The Winter Festival of Lights runs November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, with fireworks visible from the US shore.

What is open at Niagara Falls USA in winter 2026-27?

The state park and its viewpoints, the Cave of the Winds Gorge Trip, the Prospect Point Observation Tower and the nightly lights. The boat, the Hurricane Deck and, after November 29, the trolley are not.

Goat Island, Luna Island, Terrapin Point and Prospect Point stay open all winter, and they are the views most people come for anyway. Paths can close for a day or two when the spray freezes into sheet ice, so do not count on every railing being reachable after a cold snap.

The table sums up the season. Prices are 2026-27 rates from the official pages.

Is Cave of the Winds open in winter?

Yes, as the Gorge Trip. It runs daily October 19, 2026 to March 31, 2027 for $14 adult and $10 youth, last ticket at 4 p.m.

The state park closes it on Thanksgiving (November 26), Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and the last ticket on Christmas Eve is at 2:15 p.m. Tickets are sold only at the attraction on Goat Island and the Welcome Center, never online.

What you get: the elevator 175 feet down into the gorge and a viewing area near the base of Bridal Veil Falls. The wooden walkways and the Hurricane Deck come down each fall and go back up in spring. It is a fraction of the summer experience at a lower price, and the ice formations on the gorge wall can be spectacular after a freeze. Our Cave of the Winds guide covers the summer version.

When are the illuminations and fireworks this winter?

The falls are lit every night, from 4:30 p.m. in November and December. Winter Festival of Lights fireworks run at 8 p.m. on set nights from November 14 to January 9, plus midnight on New Year's Eve.

The lights are the best free thing in winter. The Niagara Falls Illumination Board lights both falls from 4:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. in November and December, from 5 p.m. in January and from 5:30 p.m. in February to mid March. Prospect Point and the Rainbow Bridge end of the park give you the American Falls in colour, with the Horseshoe Falls glowing beyond.

The Winter Festival of Lights is on the Canadian side and free: its 44th edition runs from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027 across more than 8 km of displays. The fireworks go up from the gorge between the two falls, so you can watch them from the US shore without crossing. Downtown on the New York side, Jingle Falls USA brings a tree lighting and fireworks on Old Falls Street in early December (December 5 to 7 in 2025); Niagara Falls USA posts each year's dates.

How much is parking at Niagara Falls State Park in winter?

$10 a day in Lots 1 and 2 from October 12, 2026 to March 31, 2027. Lot 3 by the Three Sisters Islands is free on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The parking page lists four lots. Lot 1 at 333 Prospect Street is closest to the Welcome Center and Prospect Point. Lot 2 at 15 Goat Island Loop Road suits Cave of the Winds and Terrapin Point. Lot 3 at 50 Goat Island Road is $10 for cars and free Tuesday to Thursday all year. Lot 4 by the Aquarium has no fee listed at the moment.

The Niagara Scenic Trolley runs 9 to 5 until November 29 (closed on Thanksgiving), at $5 for adults and $3 for youth. After that you walk. Goat Island is compact, but the bridge from Prospect Point is exposed and windy, so dress like you mean it.

Hotel pickup downtown, a guide who knows which paths are open, and a named winter replacement for the boat.

Will Niagara Falls be frozen this winter?

Not frozen solid. In a hard freeze the edges, the rocks and the trees turn to ice and ice piles up below the falls, but the water keeps going over.

The "frozen falls" photos that go viral every few winters show partial freezes: ice crusts at the edges and a white gorge, with water still pouring through the middle. That happened in 2014, 2017 and 2019, according to WorldAtlas. The only time the falls truly stopped was March 29, 1848, when an ice jam on Lake Erie dammed the river for about a day.

The best ice comes after several days well below freezing. The American Falls freeze up more visibly than the Horseshoe because the flow is smaller, and the rime on the trees of Goat Island is its own show. Walking on the ice below the falls has been banned since three people died when an ice bridge broke up in 1912.

Which tours still run in winter?

Most of them, with a substitute for the boat. The all-inclusive USA tour has an Autumn-to-Spring option; the combo and the Buffalo tour use Journey Behind the Falls.

The all-inclusive USA tour is the most honest about winter: its listing names the closing date and includes a seasonal replacement plus a Niagara Gorge walk. The USA and Canada combo goes behind the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side instead of the boat, as does the tour from Buffalo, so pack a passport. Our passport guide lists what counts.

The small-group tour picks up on either side, but one guest warned that winter closures were not made clear, so ask what runs on your date. From New York, the NYC day and night tour times its stop for the illuminations, which works well in winter when it is dark by 5 p.m. It is still a 22-hour day; see our NYC day trip guide first.

Frequently asked questions

Is Niagara Falls worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you want the falls without the crowds. The views, the lights and the Cave of the Winds Gorge Trip are open, parking is $10, and ice builds up on the rocks and trees after a cold spell. The boat is closed.

Is Maid of the Mist open in winter?

No. It closes on November 8, 2026 and reopens in spring 2027 once the ice clears. Tours substitute Journey Behind the Falls, the Gorge Trip or a gorge walk.

Can you see the fireworks at Niagara Falls from the US side in winter?

Yes. The Winter Festival of Lights fireworks are fired from the gorge between the falls and are visible from Prospect Point and the US shore, at 8 p.m. on set nights from November 14, 2026 to January 9, 2027.

Does Niagara Falls freeze?

Only partly. In a hard freeze the edges and the gorge ice over, but water keeps flowing. The falls last stopped completely on March 29, 1848, because of an ice jam.
