What to wear

The boat hands you a poncho, and you will still get wet. Here is how wet, where to stand, and what to put on your feet, your kids and your phone.

Every Maid of the Mist ticket comes with a blue hooded poncho, and Maid of the Mist says it straight: even while wearing it, you may still get wet. The boat has no indoor cabin. When it holds in the Horseshoe Falls basin, the spray comes sideways.

Getting wet is half the fun for most guests. It is less fun with soaked sneakers on a cold November afternoon. Dress for it and the 20 minutes are pure joy.

The quick answer

Yes, you get wet: your face, legs and shoes for sure, and more at the front of the top deck. Wear quick-dry clothes and shoes you don't mind soaking, keep the free blue poncho on, and stand at the lower rear for the driest ride. Put your phone in a waterproof pouch. Children 5 and under ride free, strollers stay in stroller parking, and the boats are fully wheelchair accessible.

Do you get wet on the Maid of the Mist?

Yes. The poncho keeps your body mostly dry, but expect a wet face, wet legs and wet shoes. How wet depends on where you stand and on the wind.

The boat passes the American and Bridal Veil Falls, then turns into the Horseshoe basin, and that is where the drenching happens. The lower rear of the boat is the driest; the front of the upper deck is the wettest. Guests say the same thing with more feeling: "You can stay pretty dry in certain spots or get drenched if you want."

The upper deck fills first. The bow rail is where the soaking happens.

What should you wear on the Maid of the Mist?

Quick-dry clothes, shorts or leggings in summer, and shoes that can get soaked. Skip jeans, suede and anything that takes a day to dry.

  • Feet: water shoes, sport sandals with a strap or old sneakers. The deck is wet and the water pools.
  • Legs: the poncho stops at the knee. Shorts or quick-dry trousers.
  • Top: a light layer under the poncho. In October and November add a fleece; the gorge sits in shade and the spray is cold.
  • Head: a cap under the hood keeps it from blowing back. Glasses get spotted; bring a cloth.

A guest on the all-inclusive tour put it simply: "Wear water clothes/shoes or bring change of clothes."

A guide who tells you where to stand to stay dry, or where to get soaked: boat, Cave and Goat Island in four hours.

Is the free poncho enough?

For your torso, yes. It does nothing for your shoes, and the hood blows off at the bow. It's yours to keep.

Hold the hood with one hand when the boat turns into the wind. Keep the poncho after the ride if you are doing the Cave of the Winds too: guests rate the blue Maid of the Mist poncho tougher than the yellow one at the Cave. One guest's advice: "Pack a small bag to wear under your poncho with dry socks and shoes for after the boat and cave of the winds."

How do you keep your phone or camera dry?

A waterproof phone pouch on a lanyard is the easy answer. A zip-top bag works too, and you can still shoot through it.

Spray beads on lenses in seconds, so take your photos of the American Falls on the way out, before the Horseshoe basin. In the basin, film a short video and put the phone away. Hold it with two hands or use a wrist strap: anything dropped over the rail is gone. An action camera on a strap is the best tool for the wettest part.

Can you bring kids on the Maid of the Mist?

Yes, kids of every age ride. Children 5 and under go free with a paying adult, and 6 to 12 year olds pay $19.75.

The noise and the cold spray scare some toddlers. Keep small children at the lower rear, where it is drier and calmer, and bring a full change of clothes for them. Older kids head for the bow and come back grinning. Guests on the boat and Cave adventure said it worked for the whole family: "You will get wet so be prepared! Our family (2 adults, 2 kids) had a great time."

On coach and van tours, children under 8 need a car seat by New York law. Ask the operator in advance; the NYC tours say you must bring your own.

Can you bring a stroller or a wheelchair on the Maid of the Mist?

Wheelchairs, yes: Maid of the Mist says its facilities and boats are fully ADA accessible. Strollers stay in the stroller parking at the landing.

The Observation Tower elevator takes you down to the dock and back. Since September 2026 the new Cataract Stairs give walkers a second way up from the lower gorge (274 steps, one-way in busy periods), which should ease the elevator queue. Wheelchair users keep the elevator.

Tours differ. The guided walk lists wheelchair-accessible surfaces; the Ultimate and combo tours use vans that are not wheelchair accessible and ask for a collapsible chair; the Cave of the Winds has stairs, with a lower deck for limited mobility. Pets are not allowed on the boat; ADA service dogs are welcome.

What should you wear for the Cave of the Winds?

The same as for the boat, but wetter. Shoes you don't mind soaking are a must, because the park no longer hands out sandals.

The Hurricane Deck sits about 20 feet from Bridal Veil Falls and there is no dry corner. A guest on the combo tour had the right idea: "You can bring a change of clothes and shoes and leave them in the van as it is locked everywhere we go." Compare the two in Cave of the Winds vs the boat.

What to wear on the Maid of the Mist in October and November?

Warm layers, a hat and waterproof shoes. The last boats of 2026 sail on Sunday, Nov 8, and the gorge is cold and shady by then.

Hours shrink to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October and 9 to 4 from Nov 1 to Nov 8. Ride around midday, when the sun reaches into the gorge, and bring dry socks and gloves for afterwards. From Nov 9 the boat is closed until spring; a winter tour replaces it with something drier, such as Journey Behind the Falls, which still needs a warm coat. The season closing post has the details.

Last boats before winter: book a date before Nov 8, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
