USA vs Canada boats

Two boat companies sail into the same mist below Niagara Falls, one from each country. Here is how to tell them apart, and why your tour's photos may show the other one.

Until 2013 the Maid of the Mist sailed from both banks of the Niagara River. Since the 2014 season it sails only from Niagara Falls, New York. The Canadian boat is a different company, Niagara City Cruises, and its passengers wear red ponchos instead of blue.

Both boats are good. Both pass the American Falls and push into the Horseshoe Falls basin. The confusion starts when a listing, or a friend, calls every Niagara boat "the Maid of the Mist".

The quick answer

The Maid of the Mist sails only from the US side (Prospect Point, Niagara Falls, New York) with blue ponchos, $30.25 for adults in 2026. The red-poncho boat from the Canadian side is Niagara City Cruises, about CA$48 plus tax. Both follow almost the same 20-minute route. Pick the boat on the side you are staying on; Toronto day trips ride the Canadian boat, even when the listing says "Maid of the Mist".

Is the Maid of the Mist on the US or the Canadian side?

The US side only. It leaves from the Observation Tower at Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park, New York, and has not sailed from Canada since 2013.

The two electric boats, the James V. Glynn and the Nikola Tesla, carry up to 600 passengers each and run every 15 minutes or so, from late April to early November. You reach the dock by the tower's elevator. No passport is needed, because the boat never lands in Canada, says Maid of the Mist.

Why are there two boat tours at Niagara Falls?

Because in 2012 the Niagara Parks Commission gave the Canadian boat concession to Hornblower on a 30-year lease, starting with the 2014 season. The Maid of the Mist kept its US dock.

The decision ended about 165 years of Maid of the Mist sailings from Canada, as CTV News reported at the time. Hornblower built its own boats and later renamed the service Niagara City Cruises. The Maid of the Mist company, run by the Glynn family for decades, carried on from New York; 2026 is its 141st season, per the company.

Old guidebooks, blogs and even some tour listings still mix the names up. If a photo shows red ponchos, it's the Canadian boat.

What is the difference between blue and red ponchos?

Blue means Maid of the Mist (US side), red means Niagara City Cruises (Canadian side). Yellow is the Cave of the Winds, on foot.

Which boat gets closer to the falls?

Neither, in any way you would notice. Both pass the American and Bridal Veil Falls and hold in the Horseshoe basin, where the spray soaks the bow.

The boats work the same water a few hundred yards apart. The Horseshoe Falls is 188 feet high and carries about 90% of the river, and that is where both captains park. The real difference is what comes before and after. On the US side you walk off the boat into the lower gorge right beside the American Falls, and since September 2026 you can climb the new Cataract Stairs to an overlook within 35 feet of them. On the Canadian side you board facing the whole panorama.

Our take: pick the boat on the side where you sleep. Crossing a border to swap one 20-minute ride for another makes no sense.

Which tours ride the Maid of the Mist, and which ride the Canadian boat?

Every US-side tour on this site rides the Maid of the Mist. The Toronto day trip rides Niagara City Cruises, and the Buffalo tour uses either boat by season.

One more trap: the photos on the cheapest New York day trip show the red Canadian boat, though the tour itself stays on the US side and rides the Maid of the Mist.

Is the American or the Canadian side better for seeing Niagara Falls?

Canada has the wide views of all three falls; the US side puts you inside the spray, with the Cave of the Winds, Goat Island and a free state park.

From the Canadian bank you look across at the whole scene: the American Falls, Bridal Veil and the full curve of the Horseshoe. That is the postcard. On the US side you stand at the edge of the American Falls at Prospect Point, walk Luna Island between two falls, look down into the Horseshoe from Terrapin Point and take the Cave of the Winds elevator to the foot of Bridal Veil. Entry to Niagara Falls State Park is free.

If you want both in one day, the USA and Canada combo does the US side on foot and the Canadian view from the Skylon Tower. Bring a passport for that one: see the passport guide.

Can you ride both boats on the same trip?

Yes, if you carry a passport or other border document and have the time. Most people don't bother, because the routes are almost identical.

You can walk across the Rainbow Bridge from the state park to Canada and board the red boat. The pedestrian toll is charged only on the way back into the US. Spend that hour on the Cave of the Winds or on Journey Behind the Falls instead; each shows the falls from an angle the boats can't.

What happens to both boats in winter?

Both stop. The Maid of the Mist's last day in 2026 is Sunday, Nov 8; Niagara City Cruises runs to about the end of November, weather permitting.

From Nov 9 the US-side tours swap the boat for something else. The combo and the Buffalo tour take you to Journey Behind the Falls in Canada, tunnels cut behind the Horseshoe Falls that stay open all year. The all-inclusive tour lists a "seasonal replacement experience". The boat returns in spring once the Lake Erie ice clears; 2026 opened on Apr 24.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Maid of the Mist the same as the Hornblower boat?

No. Hornblower, now called Niagara City Cruises, has run the Canadian boat since 2014 with red ponchos. The Maid of the Mist sails only from the US side, with blue ponchos.

Can you take the Maid of the Mist from Canada?

No. Since the 2014 season the Maid of the Mist boards only at Prospect Point in Niagara Falls, New York. From Canada you either cross the Rainbow Bridge with a passport or ride Niagara City Cruises.

Which boat is cheaper?

The Maid of the Mist: $30.25 for an adult in 2026, against about CA$48 plus tax for Niagara City Cruises. Children 5 and under ride the Maid of the Mist free.

Do Toronto tours include the Maid of the Mist?

Almost never. Toronto day trips stay on the Canadian side and ride Niagara City Cruises, even when the listing uses the Maid of the Mist name.
