Maid of the Mist and the Cave

You meet your guide at the Red Coach Inn by the upper rapids and spend about three hours on the two wet classics of the US side: the Maid of the Mist boat and the Cave of the Winds walkways up to the Hurricane Deck. Pick it if you can get yourself to the start and want a tight, well-paced morning with guides guests keep naming.

Niagara Falls USA: Maid of the Mist & Cave Adventure

About this experience

There's no hotel pickup here. You make your own way to the Red Coach Inn at 2 Buffalo Ave, a short walk from the park entrance, arrive 15 minutes early and look for a uniformed rep with Gray Line signage, as the listing tells you. After a briefing, the group heads into Niagara Falls State Park: the Observation Tower and the Maid of the Mist first, then Goat Island, Luna Island and the Cave of the Winds with its Hurricane Deck. The listing budgets about an hour each for the boat and the Cave, including queues.

One honest quirk. The listing sells it as a bus tour, but if not enough people book, it runs as a guided trolley and walking tour on the park's scenic trolley, and it ends at the last attraction rather than back at the start. You can stay on in the park or ride the trolley back. One guest wrote that only two trolleys were running and the group walked instead. Wear proper shoes.

Winter matters on this one too. The listing puts the boat at May to October; officially Maid of the Mist sails until November 8, 2026, then closes until spring. The Hurricane Deck is dismantled each fall, and from October 19 the Cave runs as the cheaper Cave of the Winds Gorge Trip. The listing names no winter replacement, so after November 8 check the itinerary on the booking page before paying, and don't expect the boat.

  • Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds and the Hurricane Deck in about 3 hours
  • Observation Tower admission and ponchos at both attractions
  • Goat Island, Luna Island and Bridal Veil Falls with a local guide
  • Start right by the park: no long ride first
  • Guides guests name again and again, Logan most of all

It turns out, we were the only ones on our 8:30 Thursday morning tour, which made for a very relaxed experience and a personal introduction to the whole area. We very much enjoyed learning from him, as well as his tips on where to be for various activities [...]

Tips before you book

  • Take the 8:30 a.m. departure if it's offered. One guest had the whole tour to themselves on a weekday morning.
  • Parking near the Red Coach Inn fills up. State park Lot 1 at 333 Prospect St costs $10 a day from October 12, 2026.
  • Bring a foldable wheelchair or walker? The listing asks for 24 to 48 hours' notice.
  • Infants and toddlers need their own seat on the vehicle, so book them as travellers.
  • Wear shoes you don't mind soaking. The Hurricane Deck drenches everything below the poncho.

Frequently asked questions

Is hotel pickup included on the Maid of the Mist and Cave Adventure?

No. You meet at the Red Coach Inn, 2 Buffalo Ave, Niagara Falls NY, 15 minutes before departure. It's a short walk from most downtown hotels on the US side.

Does it run after the Maid of the Mist closes?

The boat stops for the season on November 8, 2026, and the Hurricane Deck is taken down each fall. The listing names no winter replacement, so check the booking page for your date; from spring 2027 the full tour returns. Our 2027 opening post tracks the date.

How much walking is there?

A fair amount. Parts of the park are pedestrian only, the Cave of the Winds is mostly stairs, and if the group is small the tour switches to trolley and walking. Guests call it active but not strenuous.

How wet will I get?

Damp on the boat, soaked on the Hurricane Deck. Both attractions hand out ponchos, but feet and legs get wet. Our what to wear guide has the details.
