Cave or boat

One puts you on the river looking up at three waterfalls. The other puts you on a wooden deck 20 feet from one of them. In summer, do both.

The Maid of the Mist and the Cave of the Winds sit a short walk apart in the same state park, and most visitors to Niagara Falls, New York, end up comparing them. They are less alike than they sound. The boat is a 20-minute ride into the Horseshoe basin. The Cave is a walk down wooden steps to a deck that the Bridal Veil Falls pounds from above.

Together they cost $53.25 for an adult at summer prices. Here is what each gives you, how the winter changes them, and the order that keeps you dry longest.

The quick answer

Do both if you visit between May and early November: the boat shows you all three falls from the river, the Cave puts you under one of them. The boat costs $30.25 and sells online; the Cave costs $23 in summer and $14 from Oct 19, 2026, and sells only on site. Ride the boat first, then the Cave. From Nov 9 the boat is closed and the Cave runs as the shorter Gorge Trip, without the Hurricane Deck.

Should you do the Cave of the Winds and the Maid of the Mist?

Yes, in summer. They show the falls from two different places, and together they take about two hours plus lines.

The boat gives you the scale: the American Falls, Bridal Veil and the Horseshoe Falls one after another, then the roar of the basin. The Cave of the Winds gives you the force. You stand where the water lands. Guests on the boat and Cave adventure sum it up in a few words: "The maid of the mist and the cave of the winds were amazing experiences [...] Expect to get wet, but thats 90% of the fun!"

If you only have time for one, take the boat. It shows you all three falls; the Cave shows you one, up close.

What is the Cave of the Winds?

An elevator ride 175 feet down into the Niagara Gorge on Goat Island, then wooden walkways to the Hurricane Deck, about 20 feet from Bridal Veil Falls. There is no actual cave anymore.

The original cave behind Bridal Veil collapsed long ago; the name stayed. Today you get a yellow poncho, ride down, and follow the redwood walkways up and down to the decks. A lower observation deck about 150 feet back from the falls suits small children and anyone who can't manage the stairs.

The park no longer hands out its famous sandals, per the state park: bring footwear you don't mind getting soaked.

Which one gets you wetter?

The Cave of the Winds, by a distance. On the Hurricane Deck the water comes at you from above and from the side; on the boat you can pick a drier spot.

On the Maid of the Mist there is no indoor cabin, but the lower rear of the boat stays driest. Stand at the front of the top deck and you'll be wet within a minute of reaching the Horseshoe. On the Hurricane Deck there is no dry spot. One guest on the Daily Trips tour warned: "be prepared to get soaked even with a poncho!"

Which should you do first?

The boat first, in the morning, then the Cave of the Winds. You get the big picture before the close-up, and you can wear the tougher blue poncho again at the Cave.

Go to the 9 a.m. boat, when the lines are short. Afterwards, the new Cataract Stairs (274 steps, opened in September 2026) climb from the lower landing to an overlook within 35 feet of the American Falls. Then walk across to Goat Island, buy your timed Cave ticket and go down. If you drive, Lot 1 serves the boat and Lot 2 the Cave.

A guest on the small-group tour had a good tip: "Do the boat 1st and safe the blue poncho it's more heavy duty than the yellow one." Pack dry socks in a small bag under it.

Both water attractions with a guide who knows the order and the shortcuts, in a group of up to 13.

Is the Cave of the Winds open in winter?

Yes, all year, but from late fall to spring it runs as the Gorge Trip: the elevator and a paved path to a platform at the foot of Bridal Veil Falls, without the Hurricane Deck.

Every fall a crew of seven park staff takes the decks apart over about four weeks, because falling ice would smash them; in spring they rebuild, replacing about 30% of the lumber, Niagara Falls USA explains. The park moved to winter prices on Oct 19, 2026: $14 for adults and $10 for youth, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (last ticket), closed on Thanksgiving, Dec 25 and Jan 1.

Tour listings run the Hurricane Deck into early November. From Nov 9, with the boat also closed, count on the Gorge Trip only. The combo names it as the winter swap for the full Cave.

Which tours include both the boat and the Cave of the Winds?

Six on this site: the boat and Cave adventure, the Ultimate USA-side tour, the Daily Trips tour, the small-group tour, the all-inclusive tour and the USA and Canada combo.

The guided walk ($57) and the New York day trips include the boat but not the Cave.

Can kids and people with limited mobility do both?

The boat, yes: the Maid of the Mist and its boats are fully ADA accessible. The full Cave of the Winds walk has steep, wet stairs; the lower deck is the alternative.

At the Cave, the observation deck about 150 feet back from the falls is the place for toddlers, wheelchair users and anyone unsteady on wet wood. One reviewer was blunt: "If you cannot navigate stairs don't go" to the Hurricane Deck. On the boat, leave strollers in the stroller parking at the landing.

Note that some tour vans are not wheelchair accessible: the Ultimate and combo tours ask that a wheelchair be collapsible. The guided walk lists wheelchair-accessible surfaces.
