Maid of the Mist runs from spring ice-out to early November, and 2026 is no exception. The boat left the dock for its 141st season on April 24 and makes its last trips into the Horseshoe Falls basin on Sunday, November 8.
After that the gorge goes quiet on the US side until spring. The falls do not close, the park does not close, and most tours keep running. They just swap the boat for something else, and the swap is not the same on every listing.
The quick answer
The last Maid of the Mist sailing day of 2026 is Sunday, November 8, with boats running 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November 1. From November 9 the boat is closed until spring. Tours that cross into Canada swap in Journey Behind the Falls; US-only tours use the Cave of the Winds Gorge Trip, a gorge walk or viewpoints. Cave of the Winds has been on winter rates ($14 adult, $10 youth) since October 19.
When does Maid of the Mist close for the 2026 season?
Sunday, November 8, 2026. In the final week, November 1 to 8, boats run daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The official schedule and pricing page is plain about it: the Maid of the Mist "closes for the 2026 season on Sunday November 8" and is closed from November 9. Through October the hours are 9 to 5. The last week loses an hour at the end of the day, because the light goes early and the crowds thin out.
This is a week later than the last two seasons. The 2025 season ended on November 2 (Maid of the Mist) and 2024 closed on November 3. If you remember an "end of October" rule from an older guidebook, forget it for this year.
Boarding stays first come, first served right to the end. Online tickets work on any day the boat runs, and box-office tickets only on the day you buy them, so a ticket bought online in July still works on November 8.
| Dates (2026) | Boat hours | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| Sep 28 to Oct 31 | Daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Short lines, autumn colour on Goat Island |
| Nov 1 to Nov 8 | Daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. | Cold spray, quiet decks, last chance |
| Sun Nov 8 | Last sailing day | Be in line by mid afternoon |
| From Mon Nov 9 | Closed for the season | Boat back in spring 2027 |
What do the tours swap in after Maid of the Mist closes?
It depends on the tour. Combos that cross into Canada use Journey Behind the Falls, while US-only tours lean on the Cave of the Winds Gorge Trip, a gorge walk and viewpoints.
Read the listing's inclusions before you book a date after November 8. The USA and Canada combo says it outright: Journey Behind the Falls "replaces Maid of the Mist when not operating", and the Cave Gorge Trip replaces the full Cave of the Winds walk. The tour from Buffalo does the same with Journey Behind the Falls. Both need a passport.
The all-inclusive USA tour is the clearest US-only option. Its listing states that the boat "closes Nov 8, 2026 for winter" and that "a seasonal replacement experience is included", with a Niagara Gorge walk standing in for the Cave walk, and it sells a separate Autumn-to-Spring option. Others simply list the boat as seasonal: the Ultimate USA-side tour shows the boat and the Cave for late April to early November, and the boat and Cave adventure says May to October.
Our advice: if a listing does not name what replaces the boat, ask the operator through the booking before you pay for a November or winter date. All of these tours cancel free up to 24 hours before.
| Tour | Boat season on the listing | After the boat closes |
|---|---|---|
| USA and Canada combo | Late April to November | Journey Behind the Falls; Cave Gorge Trip |
| Tour from Buffalo | Maid of the Mist or the Canadian boat by season | Journey Behind the Falls |
| All-inclusive USA tour | Closes Nov 8, 2026 | Seasonal replacement; Niagara Gorge walk |
| Ultimate USA-side tour | Late April to early November | No replacement named: ask first |
| Boat and Cave adventure | May to October | No replacement named: ask first |
| Day trip from NYC | May to October, boat options only | Gorge walk, Terrapin Point and other viewpoints |
| Toronto day trip | Canadian boat, May 1 to Nov 30 | Winter attractions on the Canadian side |

Both sides in one day. When the boat is closed, Journey Behind the Falls takes its place and the Cave Gorge Trip replaces the deck walk. Bring a passport.
Explore the USA and Canada combo Tour detailsWhat does Cave of the Winds cost after October 19?
Winter rates started on October 19, 2026: $14 for adults and $10 for youth, daily from 9 a.m. with the last ticket at 4 p.m. until March 31, 2027.
The state park's Cave of the Winds page lists the winter season from October 19, 2026 to March 31, 2027, closed on Thanksgiving (November 26), Christmas Day and New Year's Day, with an early last ticket at 2:15 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Summer was $23 for adults, so the price drops by $9. Tickets are still not sold online: buy them at the attraction on Goat Island or at the Welcome Center.
The price drops because the best part goes away. Each fall crews take the Hurricane Deck and its wooden walkways apart, board by board, because falling ice would smash them (Niagara Falls USA). The winter version, sold as the Gorge Trip, still takes the elevator 175 feet down into the gorge to a viewing area near the base of Bridal Veil Falls. You will not stand 20 feet from the water, and you will not get soaked.

My trip falls after November 8. What can I still do?
Plenty: the Canadian boat often sails until late November, Journey Behind the Falls is open year-round, the Cave Gorge Trip runs all winter, and the illuminations start at 4:30 p.m.
The neat trick for mid November is the other boat. Niagara City Cruises, the red-poncho boat on the Canadian side, runs about May 1 to November 30, weather permitting. It is a different company from Maid of the Mist and the ride is similar: about 20 minutes into the Horseshoe basin. You need a passport to walk over the Rainbow Bridge. Our US vs Canada boat guide compares the two.
Without a passport, stay on Goat Island. Walk to Terrapin Point for the Horseshoe Falls, take the Gorge Trip, ride the Observation Tower elevator at Prospect Point, and stay for the lights: from November 1 the falls are illuminated from 4:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. The Winter Festival of Lights opens on the Canadian side on November 14, with fireworks on Friday and Saturday evenings, and they are visible from the US shore.

Check dates for the all-inclusive USA tourCan I still use an unused 2026 Maid of the Mist ticket?
Only until November 8. Online tickets are valid any day the boat runs during the 2026 season, and the season ends that Sunday.
The Maid of the Mist FAQ says online tickets are valid any time during the 2026 season. Nothing on the official pages carries them into 2027. Treat an unused ticket as expiring on November 8, and contact Maid of the Mist directly if you cannot get there in time. Tours sold on Viator handle their own tickets, so their free 24-hour cancellation covers you instead.
If you were planning to do it yourself on a November weekend, the direct ticket is still the cheapest way on: $30.25 for adults, $19.75 for children 6 to 12, free for 5 and under. Prices and the tower elevator are in our ticket price guide.
Is the last week of the season worth it?
Yes, if you dress for it. Lines are short and the decks are uncrowded, but the spray is cold and the day ends at 4 p.m.
Early November is the best-kept secret of the season. No queue snaking around the tower, room at the rail, and the gorge walls still showing some colour. The catch is the cold. The mist that feels great in July soaks through jeans in November, and the poncho does nothing for your shoes.
Wear a warm layer under the poncho, waterproof shoes and a hat you can pull down. Go mid morning when the sun is on the American Falls, and do not leave it to the last hour on November 8. Our what to wear guide has the full list.
